About
Phoebe Gloeckner is a graphic novelist.
She began seriously drawing and writing in her teens (spent in San Francisco), inspired by the underground comics she read as a child. Later, she earned a graduate degree in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas while continuing to draw comics.
The introduction to her first book, "A Child's Life and Other Stories" was written by Robert Crumb. Her illustrated novel, “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” was taken to the stage in a critically-aclaimed adaptation by Marielle Heller at 3LD Theatre (NYC) 1n 2010.
Gloeckner’s work has appeared in dozens of publications, and has often stirred controversy. Her books have been translated and published internationally and her artwork has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and Europe.
Gloeckner was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 2008 to work on a novel about a 15-year-old girl murdered in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The fellowship coincided with the rapid escalation of violence in Juárez, triggering the growth of new tangents in the work. Gloeckner has visited the Juarez/El Paso area several times a year since 2003, maintaining close connections with the extended family her subject, whose murder remains unsolved.
The book will be released in 2013 as a multi-media novel (electronic) as well as a traditional printed version.
